Nokia Brings Updated Windows Phone, the $99 Lumia 928, to Verizon.
Nokia on Friday announced its long-rumored Lumia 928, a high-end Windows Phone model for Verizon.
The phone will go on sale May 16 for $99 (after a $50 rebate).
It’s a new take on the Lumia 920 that debuted last year. Though generally similar, it features a different screen technology, improved flash and audio recording, and is a bit thinner than the model that has long been on sale at AT&T.
The timing is a bit odd, coming on a Friday and ahead of an event Nokia has next week to talk about what’s next for the Lumia line.Nokia and Windows Phone as a whole have been slower to bring models to CDMA carriers, focusing much of their time and energy on the more globally used GSM technology at the core of T-Mobile and AT&T’s networks.
Verizon has been selling the Lumia 822, a more midrange model, as well as Windows Phones from Samsung and HTC.
Sprint has said it will offer its first Windows Phone 8 devices this summer.
Meanwhile, two other Nokia models — on sale elsewhere — are just making their way to the U.S. T-Mobile is selling the entry-level Lumia 521 for $150 without subsidies, while AT&T’s new Aio prepaid brand is carrying the Lumia 620.
Nokia to unveil new Asha models in coming days: CEO.
At the annual general meeting on Tuesday, Nokia’s chief executive Stephen Elop told investors, “We are continuing to renew our portfolio, which includes plans to announce innovation and new products in the Asha line in the days immediately ahead.”
Nokia didn’t have a very promising first quarter in 2013. Results showed a sharp fall in sales of mobile phones. The management at Nokia has been hard at work promoting the Lumia brand of smartphones. In India, Nokia recently launched the Lumia 520 and the 720 that have become quite popular among the budget and mid-range smartphone audience.
With all the attention that’s being paid to promote the Lumia smartphones it seems that the Asha series of devices have been left behind. Not because Nokia isn’t paying attention to them, but because for the same price as an Asha device users get an entry level Android experience. Sure, the experience isn’t the best, but the fact that it qualifies as a “smartphone” is attracting the audience.
Companies like Karbonn, Micromax, Samsung and more have started dominating the entry-level smartphone market. For the same price at which you get a Nokia Asha 309 you can get a Micromax Bolt A51, Micromax Ninja A54, Karbonn A4, Samsung Rex 70 and more. For the same price as the Nokia Asha 202, you can get the Karbonn A3 and the Intex Aqua Marvel G32.
With the plethora of apps available on the Google Play store, most of which do run on budget smartphone, the Android option seems a lot more tempting for the budget consumer. Nokia does have some interesting offers on its budget devices. You have DRM free access to a plethora of music and the app ecosystem though quite nascent does support most of the popular offerings.

Budget iPhone models supposedly confirmed by parts supplier.
There are always rumours surrounding the products that Apple may have in the pipeline that can often prove to be accurate in one way or another, and recently there has been numerous speculation that the company are going to launch a budget iPhone model, which has now supposedly been confirmed by a parts supplier.
Rumours surrounding the budget iPhone model don’t seem to want to go away, and now previously reliable ETrade Supply are claiming that there are going to be lower priced iPhone models coming from Apple. The company has previously provided accurate information leading up to the unveiling of the iPhone 5 and the BlackBerry Z10, and they have now been told about the lower end models coming from Apple.
There is no mention of when these new models will become available but it is being claimed that Apple are looking to increase its market share while it looks to provide the next big thing smartphone wise.
ETrade mentions the fact that Samsung has spent a fortune marketing the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S4, with $4.3 billion mentioned that is more than Apple, Coca-Cola, HP, and Microsoft put together. This compares to 2012 where the company also spent $5.4 billion on sales and marketing that has seen increasing pressure on Apple.
Apple is looking to provide a cheaper iPhone to target emerging markets where lower cost Android and BlackBerry devices have grown in popularity, but this news comes after we recently heard other claims that Apple would launch the budget iPhone in low numbers to see how the market reacts to the device.
Do you think the time has come for a budget iPhone?
